The Casino-Theatre with its hall of 820 seats was built at the request of Napoléon III by Charles Badger and inaugurated in 1865. It became the most frequented place of entertainment and proved to be too cramped. Its extension was part of a vast campaign for modernisation of the infrastructures of the city. The old edifice remains, inserted in the new construction which in the end doubles the original surface. It is the perfect example of Art Nouveau, the hall of the Opera presents in a harmony of gold and ivory, a wonderful decoration of masks, lyres, faces and flowers, by the Polish painter and decorator Léon Rudnicki.
